Three Arrested In Human Egg Trafficking Case In Bucharest

The members of the group were allegedly bringing couples who could not have children to Romania and would then get in touch with egg donors for in-vitro fertilization procedures, people close to the investigation said.

Following four raids, the special unit seized papers, computers and over EUR130,000.

Three persons are to remain in custody for 24 hours and two are banned from leaving the country.

According to the quoted sources, Israeli citizens were members of the group. The doctor is an Israeli national with Polish citizenship.

On Sunday, 30 Israeli citizens were arrested in a fertility clinic in Bucharest, under suspicion of involvement in a case of human egg trafficking.

Israel’s Embassy in Romania stays in contact with the Romanian authorities to solve the case, Ynetnews.com reported.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry official said the Israeli citizens came to Bucharest for medical treatment. Most of them were released on bail, while two of them remained in custody and hired lawyers to obtain their release.

The website said dozens of people were arrested in the raid, including some of the clinic's management, who were also questioned for trading human stem cells.

It was also reported that Israeli women suspected of selling their eggs were questioned.

Lilly Ben Harush, Israeli consul general to Bucharest, received details on the case on Sunday night, and the Israeli authorities confirmed the information on the arrest.
