The truck, which was carrying sand, hadn't stopped for a red light at a railway crossing near the village of Nicolae Balcescu, in the southeastern county of Calarasi, and was hit full-on by a train travelling from Bucharest to Constanta, said local police spokeswoman Ramona Tudor.

She added no passengers on the train were injured and the train continued on its route after a 20-minute halt.

The railway crossing where the accident took place does not have barriers but is signaled by acoustic and light systems which were working at the time of the accident, Tudor said.

Units from the local Emergency Inspectorate and Romanian Railway Infrastructure workers were dispatched to the site of the accident.
