Basescu said the context in Transdniester is similar to that in South Ossetia and Kosovo, namely a minority id concentrated in one region and the “so-called legitimacy of the mother countries to interfere to defend their citizens”.
Basescu said the political conditions are not met in Transdniester, due to the way the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Russia are approaching the issue, but the rest of the ingredients for a conflict is there.
"We were caught unprepared by the events in Georgia, and could occur in any other area labeled as one of frozen conflict. We currently have no means to prevent such conflicts from bursting out,” he added.
Ukrainian President Yushchenko said the Georgian war broke out because of the frozen conflict in the region, and unless measures are taken to prevent it, what happened in Ossetia could happen in other regions involved in such conflicts, like Abkhazia and Transdniester.
Basescu had a two-hour meting with Yushchenko in Kiev Wednesday.
After the meeting in Kiev,Basescuwill meetMoldovan President Vladimir Voronin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Turkish President Abdullah Gül, Chishinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The presidential administration said Basescu’s official visits would focus on the situation in Georgia and its impact on a regional level.
