Parental Benefit For Romanians Worth 85% Of Last Year’s Incomes

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies adopted Wednesday with 171 votes in favor and two abstentions the legislative initiative stipulating a parent benefit worth 85% of the average of the last 12 months’ incomes, no less than the current indemnity of 600 lei (EUR1=RON3.7869).

The initiator of the legislative draft, Lavinia Sandru of the National Initiative Party, said estimations show Romania will have one million more children in 2054 following the enforcement of this law.

Social democrat Minodora Cliveti said the law eyes both mothers and fathers, as this indemnity is granted for the parental leave.

Democrat liberal Raluca Turcan said she wished this law had been adopted long time ago, not in the wake of the campaign for general elections due on November 30.

Labor Minister Mariana Campeanu said the Government backs this legislative initiative, which entails minimum budget efforts and does not pose any threats to the budget.

The Chamber of Deputies has the final say on this normative act.
