Brasov Armed Robbery Suspect Is Moldovan, Has Criminal Record – Minister

"We’ve detained this person (Serghei Gorbunov –e.n.) because he refused to return to the Craiova Prison, citing medical reasons. The fact that he is among the suspects in the case in Brasov is a different matter,” said local police head Constantin Arisanu.
Romanian interior minister Liviu Dragnea said Saturday the main suspect who killed two people and injured a third in the armed robbery that occurred Thursday evening in Brasov is a Moldovan citizen with a criminal record.

The minister said the suspect was involved in two similar attacks five years ago.

"The main suspect in this case was seized in Brasov. He is a Moldovan citizen and he’s currently being heard by police and prosecutors,” Dragnea said.

He said the circle of suspects is wider and police are also investigating other potential perpetrators.

Earlier Saturday, local police spokesman Liviu Naghi told MEDIAFAX that local police detained any suspect in the armed robbery that occurred Thursday evening.

"Don’t ask me to comment on other people’s statements. Our answer is: we haven’t detained any suspect. When we catch him, we’ll let you know," Naghi said.

Prosecutor Ramona Diaconu of the Brasov Court of Appeals told Realitatea TV that no arrest warrant was issued so far in this case, but several people are being heard.

Two people were shot dead and a third was injured during the armed robbery Thursday evening at a currency exchange office in the center of Brasov.

According to the General Police Inspectorate, two of the victims were employees of the exchange office and the third, a passer-by who tried to stop the robber. The passer-by, 55, was shot in the heart and died shortly after the attack.

One of the exchange office’s employees, 33, was shot in the head and died in intensive care after a three-hour coma. The third victim, 38, lost an eye.

The attacker managed to steal a bag of money from the two exchange office employees, which he later abandoned in the street and fled the scene.
