Brasov Court of Appeals Starts Procedure to Revoke Membership of CSM Chairman

Court spokesman Cosmin Dicu told MEDIAFAX on Monday that the institution initiated the procedure, which will need the backing of 15 other appeal courts, including Romania’s Military Court of appeals, to be tabled.

The court later issued a statement in which it explained that it launched a procedure because the CSM chairman initiated proposals to amend judicial bills in January without waiting for the body, which serves as Romania's top judicial watchdog, to make a decision on the subject in its plenary.

The magistrate also decided to attend talks with PM Viorica Dancila on Monday regarding a recent controversial judicial decree which sparked numerous protests among magistrates.

The meeting was boycotted by some of the country’s most important magistrate associations, which instead called for a repeal of the decree.

Savonea was elected as CSM president in December 2018.
