Bucharest District 4 Mayor’s Driving License Suspended On Suspicion Of Fraud

Prefect Marcel Proca signed Monday the order suspending the Bucharest mayor’s driving license, saying the mayor had taken his driving license exam in Arges County using an address where he never stayed.

The prefect’s order will be sent Monday to the Pitesti Court, which will rule on the suspension of the license.

"I also signed eight other driving license suspension orders today (Monday -e.n.), so we now have 329 suspended licenses and the Arges Police has received an additional 57 licenses we suspect were achieved fraudulently,” the prefect said.

Trials to annul driving licenses that were allegedly obtained using fraud started in Pitesti early May, but no definite ruling was given yet.

The Romanian government passed an emergency decree on February 20 stating that driving licenses suspected of having been obtained using acts of corruption shall be annulled. The measure is to be applied to 3,500 such licenses obtained in Pitesti, where investigators indicted 28 people for the rigging of driving tests. Among the accused, there are ten are police officers and the head of the local driving license department, Gheorghe Codrut Vlasceanu.
