Bucharest Mayor Lobbies For Authorization To Hire Dalli Staff

Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu said Tuesday he sent the government a memo asking authorization to hire personnel from the street parking management company Dalli Exim, which has been put out of business after local authorities took over public parking services.

Oprescu said he asked for derogation from GO 34/2009 freezing new hiring in the public sector, to be able to employ part of Dalli’s personnel.

“The Public Parks Division (with the Bucharest mayoralty – e.n.) has 300 positions, of which some 150 are currently filled. Thus, we will be able to hire, following a selection, part of Dalli’s 134 employees,” Oprescu said after a meeting with Dalli representatives.

Some 100 employees with Dalli staged a protest in front of the Bucharest City Hall earlier Tuesday, pressing for jobs.

Dalli has sent layoff notices to all its employees, following an order of the general mayor trough which street parking services were transferred from Dalli’s management to the mayoralty.

Dalli’s employees threaten to organize daily protests in front of the City Hall, until their situation is resolved.

According to Dalli officials, the company was compelled under an agreement it signed back in 1995 to hire the city hall personnel previously in charge with managing street parking services.

In a statement released Friday, Dalli said 147 employees will lose their jobs following Oprescu’s decision to terminate their contract and asked the authorities to come up with a solution.
