In a letter sent to the Romanian authorities, the EC Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou requested the country’s help in speeding up community actions toward finding a viable vaccine, the ministry said in a statement.

“According to the European official, the Commission wishes immediate co-ordination in the community regarding vaccine procurement management and distribution strategy in case of a pandemic in Europe, urging for the support of health ministers across the EU,” the statement noted.

It said Romania’s Cantacuzino Institute is fully equipped to manufacture and bottle a vaccine against the H1N1 virus, should it be provided with an isolated strain.

The Institute has been accredited to confirm the new flu virus in national and foreign patients from nine countries in the region, the ministry mentioned.

Romania has confirmed so far five infections with the H1N1 virus.

All five patients are in good condition in hospital.
