EC Mission To Evaluate Romania's Progress In Priority Areas Next Week – EC President

Barroso said he and Romanian President Traian Basescu discussed how best to protect the most vulnerable groups of society and how to invest in growth. The EC president said he believes European funds can play a crucial role in stimulating the economy and reducing poverty.

Barroso said the flow of European funds needs to be sped up so that the money can be put to its best use. His discussion with Basescu attempted to find a way to give new impetus to this area through a new initiative on European Union investments. "This involves an action plan to accelerate delivery, […] increased political oversight in Romania on the structural funds and further technical assistance from the Commission to prove the administrative capacities at all levels in Romania," he said.

The EC president said he will write to Basescu later to detail these aspects. He also announced that experts will come to Bucharest next week and evaluate Romania's progress in the seven priority areas identified by the Commission.

Barosso congratulated Basescu for his quick reaction to the EC's recommendations in the July CVM report.
