EXCLUSIVE: Romanian Chief Anticorruption Prosecutor Has Mandate Extended Until End March

Romania’s chief anticorruption prosecutor Daniel Morar was delegated to head the National Anticorruption Department, or DNA, for another 90 days starting January 1, 2009.

Chief prosecutors Doru Tulus and Carmen Galca were also delegated within DNA for another 90 days, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX Thursday.

In lack of propositions for a justice minister nominee, Romania’s prosecutor general Codruta Kovesi extended prosecutors’ mandates.

In November, Kovesi extended the mandate of chief anticorruption prosecutor Daniel Morar until the end of the year, as the justice minister and the head of state hadn’t reached an agreement to appoint a new chief prosecutor.

Justice minister Catalin Predoiu proposed the appointment of Monica Serbanescu as head of the Anticorruption Department, or DNA, and the appointment of Morar as high representative of the Justice Ministry in Brussels or deputy chief prosecutor at DNA. Morar declined both offers.

Serbanescu was rejected for the position both by President Traian Basescu and the High Council of Magistrates and the justice minister made no other proposal since.
