The study also says 5% of those questioned intended to buy a car within the next six months. This is similar to the 6% recorded in 2009, but down from 2008, when 9% said they were planning to buy a car.

According to the research, 60% of respondents said they were interested in buying second-hand cars.

Over 75% said they were going to pay for the car with their own money, in cash.

„Between 2008 and 2009, the number of Romanians preferring to pay cash for a car was lower, possibly because of increased uncertainty among consumers, lower stable income and availability of loans, as well as more difficult access to loans in 2010,” says the study.

Around 1000 subjects were interviewed every month between January and December 2010 for this study.

Another survey by GfK, concerning insurance purchase habits and conducted last month, says only 38% of Romanians have their own car, and 19% of them hold voluntary car insurance (CASCO).

Around 45% of CASCO holders said the price played the biggest part in selecting their insurer, while 74% of RCA holders said the price was the most important factor. Bucharest has significantly fewer drivers who do not hold or have never held a CASCO policy, compared to the total sample (39% v. 70%).

Among owners of new cars, 38% hold CASCO policies at the moment, 22% had one in the past, but did not renew it, while 40% do not have and have never had a CASCO policy. Some 85% of the owners of used cars have also never had a voluntary car insurance policy.
