Heroin Prices In Romania Doubled

Drug consumers will have to pay twice as much for a dose of heroin, with the price now at 70-80 lei (EUR1=RON4.3096) on the Bucharest drug market. They will also put their life in jeopardy, because although there is less heroin in a shot, the concentration of chemicals is higher.

According to Bucharest Police spokesman Christian Ciocan, since the beginning of this year, officers with the Bucharest Organized Crime Brigade have carried out dozens of raids, seizing a total of 2 kilos of heroin, 200 LSD tablets and 150 ecstasy pills.

Ciocan said that Tuesday alone saw the capture of 120 drug units from street dealers. Officers will continue their raids Wednesday, with four more searches planned.

The police spokesman explained that the price of heroin has recently gone up from RON30-40 to RON70-80, and the amount of heroin in a dose has dropped from 0.10 to 0.02, replaced by chemical compounds. This not only affects consumers’ health, but also increases the risk of overdose.

Over 1,000 drug consumers were helped, last year, in the 47 Centers for Drug Prevention, Counseling and Evaluation (CPECA) all over the country, with heroin and cannabis being the most commonly used substances.

According to data provided by the National Anti-Drug Agency, the integrated assistance programs benefited 1,007 consumers, 773 of whom used heroin, 126 – cannabis, 37 – alcohol, 18 – cocaine, 15 – tobacco and 14 – inhalants.

Of those who stated that heroin is the substance they commonly use, most (691 people) are registered with CPECA Bucharest and Ilfov.

Since the beginning of this year, over one hundred street dealers and drug consumers have been identified by police officers.
