Lists Of Romanian EP Candidates Require Min 200,000 Signatures

Romania’s lists of candidates for the European Parliament elections due for June must include the signatures of at least 200,000 supporters and must ensure representation of both sexes, according to a government emergency Ordinance approved Wednesday.

Under the act, which amends Law 33/2007 regarding EP elections, each list cannot exceed the number of EP seats by more than ten seats.

Political parties, alliances and organizations of minority nationals, can form coalitions only at national level, based on signed protocols, the act noted.

In addition, one party, alliance or organization of minority nationals can only form one electoral alliance.

The protocols to form electoral alliances are to be filed at the Romanian Central Elections Office in 48 hours after such alliances are established. The Elections Office will decide whether to allow or reject an alliance in 24 hours upon receiving the application.

For the purpose of electing Romanian representatives in the European Parliament, the Romanian territory is considered a sole constituency.

Romanian government on Wednesday set the date of EP elections for June 7.

Romanians will have to elect 33 Euro-deputies.

The elections will take place at the same time in all 27 member states, giving the 375 million voting European citizens a say in EU politics.

Between January 2007 and June 2009, according to the Romanian and Bulgarian EU Accession Act, the number of deputies in the European Union Parliament is 785, of whom 35 are Romanians; they were elected following the first elections on November 25, 2007.
