Low-cost airliner Wizz Air estimates to carry nearly two million passengers to and from Romania in 2010, up 21% from 2009 when it carried 1.65 million passengers, considering the company's intention to launch new flights and extend its fleet.

Low-cost Airliner Wizz Air Estimates 21% Hike In Passenger Traffic In Romania In 2010

Natasa Kazmer, Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at Wizz Air, on Thursday said Wizz Air expects to carry nearly two million passengers to and from Romania in 2010, which translates into an increase compared to 2009, as it plans to launch new flights and set up new operations bases.

Wizz Air reported an 87% increase in passenger traffic on the year in 2009 and a load factor of 85%, similar to 2008, the company said.

In 2009, Wizz Air set up its third operations base in Timisoara, western Romania, doubled its transport capacity to six aircrafts and launched new flights on 16 routes.

In 2010, Wizz Air plans to outfit its operation base in Cluj-Napoca, northwestern Romania, with a third aircraft, which will allow the company to operate new flights to Pisa and Cuneo/Torino, as of June 2010. Wizz Air will also launch flights from Timisoara to Forli/Pisa, as of March, and from capital city Bucharest to Pisa, as of June this year.

At European level, Wizz Air carried 7.8 million passengers in 2009, up 33% on the year, with the Romanian market seeing the biggest increase, and estimates to carry over 10 million passengers in 2010.

In 2009, Wizz Air established a new operations base in Prague, the Czech Republic, reaching a total 11 operations bases in Centrala and Eastern Europe, and launched 40 new flights, boasting a network to 147 routes. Also, the company extended its fleet with seven aircrafts, reaching a total 27 Airbus A320 aircrafts.

The company's 27 Airbus A320 aircrafts operate flights from its 11 operations bases in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
