Mircea Geoana’s Dismissal As Senate Chairman Ruled Constitutional

On December 7, the Court postponed a ruling on the replacement of Geoana as Senate chairman.

Geoana, who was ousted from the Social Democratic Party and thus lost political support to fill the position, contested his dismissal on November 24. He said the Senate chairman is elected for four years and is politically neutral and the condition of political support applies to members of the Senate's standing office, where the chairman has a special statute.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party submitted a claim with the Constitutional Court over the election of democrat liberal Vasile Blaga as Senate chairman following Geoana's dismissal. The party claims the new Senate chairman should have been elected from among its members.
