Most Romanians Buy Sweets, Clothing As Christmas Presents – Survey

"Most Romanians plan to offer sweets as Christmas presents rather than spend their money on long-lasting goods. They plan to buy sweets specific for the winter holidays (56.5%), clothes, footwear and clothing accessories (39%), decorative items (28%), games and toys (24%) and cosmetic products or services," the survey indicates.

According to the survey, 9% of Romanians expressed interest in buying white and brown goods as Christmas presents, 4% plan to buy IT&C equipment and devices and 1% of them expressed interest in other telecom services.

White and brown goods are mainly purchased for own use, yet, a large percentage of people would buy such products to offer as presents to female sweethearts. IT and telecom devices are purchased both for own use and to be offered as presents to children, while electronic devices and telecom services are mainly purchased for own use.

The most popular white goods are kitchen appliances, washing machines and microwave ovens. As regards IT&C equipment and devices, Romanians are mainly inclined to buy cell phones and desktop appliances, while most of them are interested in buying digital cameras and TV sets - classic TV sets, HDTV or LCD TV, during the winter holidays.

Asked to name the place where they will buy white and brown goods or IT&C equipment during the winter holidays, either for own use or to offer as presents, 53% of respondents mentioned hypermarkets or discount stores, while 22% of them mentioned large home appliances retailers.

Romanians prefer to get information on Christmas presents, such as white and brown goods or IT&C devices, directly in stores, while TV commercials and internet represent a source of information as important as stores selling these products.

Nearly two in ten Romanians said they would not buy Christmas presents this year, with people aged over 50, people living in rural areas, those living alone or having no children, or people living on less than 700 lei (EUR1=RON4.2459) accounting for the bulk.

Data comes from the monthly Omnibus survey conducted by GfK and is representative for Romania's population aged over 15. The data were collected in November 2009 on a sample of 1,000 respondents in urban and rural areas.
