New AH1N1 Virus Patient Confirmed In Romania, Toll Reaches 14

Romania confirmed Saturday a new infection with the AH1N1 flu virus, taking the number of cases in the country to fourteen.

The patient is a little girl who arrived on June 11 in Timisoara, western Romania, from Toronto, Canada, along with her great grandmother.

The two were hospitalized at the "Victor Babes" infectious diseases hospital in Timisoara. The girl is kept under medical supervision and receives antiviral medicine, while the old woman, who has not yet presented any swine flu-like symptoms, only attends to the little girl.

Nine of the fourteen people infected with the AH1N1 virus have already been released from hospital.

Romanian health minister Ion Bazac on Friday underscored Romania does not register cases of widespread infections, adding that, apart from basic hygienic rules, Romanians need not make any changes in their daily lives.

Bazac mentioned masks will be distributed to border police and doctors who come in contact with people coming in from some of the states most affected by the new virus, such as the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

On Thursday, WHO officially declared the swine flu a pandemic, raising the alert to the highest level of six.

The organization declared the first influenza pandemic in 41 years, after the infections with new H1H1 flu virus climbed to 27,737 cases in 74 countries and left 141 people dead.
