The weaker figures were due to a decrease in the number of German and Scandinavian tourists, as well as to the withdrawal from the Romanian market of Germany’s tour operator TUI, ANAT’s president Dragos Anastasiu said.

Atanasiu expressed his discontent with the poor efforts of the local authorities at the seaside regarding tourism promotion.

“We are upset and angry at the authorities’ efforts regarding promotion, as they fail to get involved in a series of issues we consider to be very simple, such as stray dogs, green spaces or lakes,” Anastasiu said.

Still, ANAT’s estimations indicate overall tourism sales for the Romanian seaside hotels will increase by 5% to 20% on the year.

As to the number of Romanian tourists who chose to spend their holidays abroad, Atanasiu said the figures saw a 25% increase on the year to some 700,000 persons.

The destination of choice remained Greece, with some 250,000 Romanian tourists, followed by Bulgaria (150,000 tourists), Turkey (130,000), Spain (70,000), Tunisia (50,000) and Egypt (20,000).
