One Dead, Four Injured After Train Goes Off Rail In SE Romania

A fast train going on the route Ploiesti-Iasi went off the rails on Saturday at 17:00 local time, near the train station in Valea Calugareasca city, Prahova county, and one person, a 17 year-old girl, lost her life in the incident.

The locomotive and the train’s six cars went off the rail after passing over the switch near Valea Calugareasca train station.

The 17 year-old girl who lost her life in the incident was identified as Alexandra Cosmina D.  She was a student in the tenth grade at the Agriculture High School “Valeriu Cotea" from Focsani, and according to the school’s principal one of the best students.

Other four people were injured and immediately transported to the Ploiesti emergency hospital.  

A committee to investigate the causes that led to the accident was set up and transports minister Ludovic Orban said that the main suspicions are related to switch no. 9 that had been under revision two-three days before the accident took place.
