Romania Foreign Min: Italy Officially Confirms Death Of Romanian Woman In Deadly Quake

"So far, Italian authorities have officially confirmed the death of only one Romanian citizen," Romania’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Alin Serbanescu said Tuesday.

Serbanescu declined to provide further details, but stressed the aforementioned female victim is not the Romanian child recently reported dead on www.evangelici.net, the website of the Evangelic community in L'Aquila.

"The ministry received no official confirmation from the Italian authorities regarding other Romanian casualties. However, the Romanian Embassy to Italy continues to check related information," Serbanescu said.

Adnkronos news agency on Monday informed, citing the head of the city of L'Aquila, Stefania Pezzopane, that a Romanian family died in San Demetrio following the powerful quake in L’Aquila.

According to latest data, more than 179 people died and 34 were reported missing and, according to Italian officials, the death toll is likely to rise as rescue crews clawed through the debris of fallen homes.
