Romania Lower House Endorses Integrity Agency Bill, Final Vote To Be Held Thursday

The amendments brought by the Chamber's committee for legal matters were adopted with no objections Tuesday and the final vote on the bill will be held Thursday afternoon.

Democrat liberal Gabriel Andronache, secretary of the Chamber's committee for legal matters, said, with respect to the reexamination of the law, that the lower house is the first chamber notified in this respect. He added that the members of the committee debated on the reexamination request and subsequently decided, with only one abstention, to submit for adoption in the Chamber's plenary meeting the report on the reexamination of the law, with all amendments allowed. The Chamber adopted in its plenary meeting the amendments brought by the deputies in the committee for legal matters with no objections.

The Chamber's committee on Monday finalized the report on the reexamination of the law, at the request of the head of state, and unanimously decided that the wealth and interests statements filled out by high officials should include anonymzed addresses, persornal identification numbers and signatures.

Basescu wrote Monday to the heads of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, renewing his request for the adoption of the Civil and Criminal procedural Codes, and the law on the National Integrity Agency, before the Parliament recess.

Romania's integrity agency, a EU-backed public anticorruption body, was set up in 2007 recommended by the European Union to make public officials more accountable and crack down on endemic corruption. It has targeted politicians and officials in all parties.
