Romania PM Urges Ministers To Cut High Bonuses, Threatens To Sack Defiers

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc told ministers, during a Government meeting held Wednesday evening, that wage bonuses granted to employees of public institutions are way too high and asked them to cease the payment of such incentives, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX Wednesday.

The sources said the prime minister threatened to sack anyone who doesn't comply. Boc's call was made during discussions on ways to even out wages earned by certain categories of employees within ministries.

Finance Ministry data released in May show that the bonus fund allotted to employees of public institutions exceeded 1.1 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2254) in 2009, for an average of 336,648 budgeted positions.

Romania's Government survived a no-confidence motion Tuesday against its austerity measures, which will now be passed into legislation. The decisions taken by the Government aim to slash public spending and bring the budget deficit down to 6.8% of GDP this year, from 7.4% of GDP in 2009.
