Romania’s Agric Min To Maintain Current Subsidies For Farmers

Romania’s agriculture ministry will maintain the current subsidies granted to producers in the agriculture field, said on Thursday minister Dacian Ciolos.

“I believe that the current subsidies are high enough, but we have not given up on finding a way to please producers. The prices and costs of food products regard the mechanisms of the market,” said Ciolos.

The members of the Agrostar Federation on Wednesday threatened to go on strike, both in Bucharest and Brussels, and asked the government to adopt a real policy regarding the subsidies for the agriculture field. Unionists ask for a 50% cut in diesel oil prices as well as financial support for each agriculture sector.

Unions in the agriculture sector threatened to go on strike as of March and announced to protest both in front of the headquarters of the agriculture ministry as well as that of the European Commission Delegation in Romania.
