Romania’s Democratic Liberal Party - New Structure, Not Merger – Official

Romania’s Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) leader Theodor Stolojan said Tuesday after a meeting with democrats that what the two parties decided is “not a merger, but the creation of a new party, the Democratic Liberal Party”.

Stolojan added it is too early to say whether he will run for the position of party president.

Liberal democrats and democrats had a two-hour meeting Tuesday, and Stolojan said they discussed the preparation of the meetings Wednesday of the leaders of each party.

Stolojan added talks to create a new party had been going on for some time, and had been halted during the electoral campaign for European Parliament elections.

Stolojan insisted that this operation is not a merger, but the creation of a new party. However, he added he cannot talk about the legal status of the new organization before party leaders discuss it.
