Romania’s Ex-Secret Service Official Appointed Interim Deputy Head Of Interior Min Division

Former head of the General Counterespionage Department within the Romanian Secret Service SRI, Paul Iordache, who was involved in the SRI-KGB scandal in 2001, was appointed interim deputy head of the Intelligence and Internal Protection Division within the Interior Ministry, official sources said.

In 2001, Iordache was discharged as head of the General Counterespionage Department after a scandal involving SRI’s former head Radu Timofte and former KGB agents in Romania.

Iordache was accused, alongside other secret service officers, of breaching the law protecting Romania’s national security and the law regulating the activity of SRI.

SRI officials decided back in 2001 that the document regarding Timofte’s alleged collaboration with KGB had been drafted in 1993 and subsequently unveiled in 1998 and 2000.

In May 2001, SRI officials said in a press release that the disclosure of the document represents a serious crime, which can trigger severe consequences.

SRI announced on March 15, 2001 that brigade general Bujorel Iamandi has been discharged as head of the Protection Department. SRI officials subsequently launched an internal investigation and found out that Timofte was "abusively" included, alongside other high officials, in a document "fabricated on command" by SRI officials in 1993.
