Romania’s trade deficit narrowed in the first five months to EUR3.62 billion from EUR9.1 billion in the same period a year earlier, the National Statistics Institute reported Friday.

In the January-May period, exports were at EUR11 billion, down 21.1% compared with the same period a year before, while imports fell 36.5% on the year, to EUR14.6 billion.

In May alone, Romania’s trade deficit was of EUR704.7 million, compared with EUR1.82 billion in May 2008.

Exports were at EUR2.27 billion in May, up 5.9% compared with April, but down 25.2% on the year.

Imports fell 38.9% on the year, to EUR2.97 billion in May. Compared with the previous month, imports were down 1.1%.

Exports are calculated exclusive of costs, insurance and freight fees, but imports are calculated including such costs.

The European Union, which Romania joined in 2007, was the country's main source of imports in the first five months, accounting for EUR10.75 billion. Exports to the European Union’s 27 member states stood at EUR8.22 billion.

Romania’s trade deficit was up 3.4% in 2008 to EUR22.5 billion, from EUR21.7 billion in 2007, with the exports growing last year at a higher pace than imports.
