Berceanu said during a visit to Cluj that overdue debts to Bechtel must be paid off without delay to avoid penalties. The minister added no money is available to continue works on the Transylvania Highway.

According to Berceanu, the ministry's priorities are projects that use non-reimbursable EU funds, then projects that use funds from foreign banks and projects financed exclusively by the state budget.

Bechtel director of communications Bogdan Sgarcitu told MEDIAFAX Tuesday Romania must pay Bechtel about EUR80 million.

Sgarcitu said works are currently carried out on the Turda - Campia Turzii sector, adding the constructor is waiting for money to start works on the Gilau - Nadasel sector.

Sgarcitu said recently that Bechtel wants to continue works on three other sectors of the Transylvania Highway, in Cluj and Bihor, provided the Romanian Government ensures the necessary funds.
