Romania’s Pres Says New Justice Min Must Have A Clean Past

Romania’s president Traian Basescu on Wednesday said he has nothing against senator Norica Nicolai, the liberals’ proposal for the justice minister position, but added he wishes the new justice minister to have a “clean” past.

Basescu said Nicolai’s reputation has been dented in the public eye and that her past actions are incompatible with the position of justice minister.

The president alluded to the incident that took place in 2007, when the niece of Norica Nicolai voted in her place during a Senate meeting.

Basescu also talked about the 1987 incident, when Nicolai amended, according to her professional portfolio, an arrest warrant. “The professional portfolio uses the term amended but in fact the correct term would be forged an arrest warrant,” the president said.

Basescu and Prime Minister Tariceanu have failed to reach an agreement regarding the person who should feel in the position of justice minister.

While the president is against Nicolai’s appointment, the Prime Minister is determined to stand by his nomination of the liberal senator.
