Atanasiu said liberals made a clear decision and gave the government a confidence vote to carry on with its mandate “as long as it is not overthrown following a no-confidence vote in parliament”.

He added the liberal government will not step down, but would be taken down democratically if a no-confidence motion were to be adopted in parliament.

"I have seen that many parties are ready to vote on a no-confidence motion, but none are ready to submit one. I’ve seen the statements of democrat-liberal leaders, who said they would back a no-confidence motion against any government that doesn’t include them. I expected that, it came as no surprise. I’ve seen the statements of Mircea Geoana who want the government to step down but won’t submit a no-confidence motion. I’ve seen that the president himself has wanted the government to go for three years now and he is doing all he can to make it happen, only he does not have the constitutional right to submit a no-confidence motion and bring down the government,” Atanasiu said.

He added talk of early elections will continue until the fall, when planned elections will take place and the parliament changes its structure.

The leader of Romania’s leftist opposition, social democrat Mircea Geoana, said Wednesday that early legislative elections would help the country overcome the political block caused by the battle between the president and the prime minister.
