Romania Still Under Flood Threat, Evacuations Continue

Romanian water administrators announced Friday that a dam in Ceatalchioi, in southeastern county of Tulcea, has yielded to water pressure, adding the partial evacuation of people, which started two days ago, will continue.

Cristian Roman, prefect of northern county of Botosani, has also issued an evacuation order for localities placed on the Baranca-Radauti sector of the Prut river, as authorities said new freshets are expected in the area. Several streets and households in port city Constanta are waterlogged due to rainfall over the past 12 hours.

Hydrologists extended Friday the code red flood advisory for the Prut's sections in Botosani. The code orange flood alert for the Prut's sectors in the northeastern county of Vaslui and the southeastern county of Galati, as well as for the Siret's sectors in Galati and for the Tisa's sector in Maramurs, northwestern Romania, is still valid.

Romanian weather authorities issued a code yellow alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in six counties in southeastern Romania, valid until Saturday morning. The counties under alert are Braila, Calarasi, Constanta, Galati, Ialomita and Tulcea.

Precipitation is expected to exceed 30 liters per square meter and even 50 liters per square meters on the Black Sea shore.

Romania has been severely hit by floods over the past two weeks, leaving 23 dead and about 18,000 evacuated and hundreds of homes, roads, farmland and pastures damaged.
