Voter turnout at the European Parliament election in Romania was of 4% by GMT 0700, Central Electoral Bureau spokesman Marian Muhulet said.

The spokesman added turnout of 5.07% in rural areas and 3.22% in urban areas.

Comparatively, at the national parliamentary election held in November 2008, voter turnout by GMT 0700 was of 4.87%, while at the EP election in 2007, voter turnout was of 3.79% by GMT 0700.

Voter turnout in capital city Bucharest was of 2.79% by GMT 0700.

About 18 million Romanians are expected to cast their ballots Sunday, along voters in 18 other European Union member states, including France, Germany, Spain and Poland. 

Polls in Romania close at GMT 1800 and the first official results, that will give a glimpse of the future EU Parliament’s political color, will be released starting GMT 2000, after exit-polls are published by each EU country.
