Romanian Antifraud Authorities May Enter Company Building, Land For Checkups

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Friday passed a law whereby public authorities and institutions, as well as private and state-owned companies and individuals conducting business must allow access and checkups by Antifraud Department officials in their headquarters, vehicles and land.

The Presidency said in a press release Friday the head of state passed the law regulating the organization of the country's Antifraud Department (DLAF).

The draft law was approved by the Government in December 2010 and was rejected by the Senate in February 2011. The Chamber of Deputies, which had the final say on the matter, adopted the bill with 284 to six votes and three abstentions on April 12.

The law states that the Antifraud Department will have the right to require information and documents it needs to conduct check-ups at any entity whose activity has economic purposes.

People or companies refusing to allow antifraud officials access to information and documents can be fined 500 lei (about EUR120) to RON5,000 (about EUR1,219). (EUR1=RON4.1208)
