Romanian Cab Drivers Protest Again In Front Of Bucharest Mayoralty

Several taxi drivers gathered on Tuesday morning in front of the mayoralty of Romania’s capital city Bucharest asking that lawmakers renew their individual transportation licenses.

Bucharest general mayor Adriean Videanu said he would do all he can to solve the conflict and the protesters’ leaders are currently discussing with the mayor to find means to put an end to the situation.

Taxi drivers said they are ready to go as far as blocking traffic in Bucharest, if authorities fail to find solutions to their demands. They state that the norms of the Law regulating the activity of taxi drivers show “complete contempt towards taxi drivers.”

Remulus Nedelcu, president of the National Association of the Employers’ of Transportation Operators said that if authorities fail to solve the unionists requests, on January 17, 2008 taxi drivers throughout the country will go on strike and will block traffic in Bucharest and county seats.

Nedelcu said that the Law regulating taxi drivers’ activity did not take into consideration the requests made by taxi drivers.

This is the last, from a series of protests that started when Government approved the Law regulating taxi drivers’ activity.
