Romanian Carmaker Dacia Sold Over 311,000 Cars In 2009, Up 20.5% YY

In 2008, Dacia sold 258,372 vehicles, of which 84,708 in Romania.

"Dacia thus ends the fifth consecutive year of two-digit sales growth, which allowed it to go from less than 100,000 cars sold in 2004 to over 300,000 sold in 2009," the Romanian carmaker said in a news release.

The sharp increase in sales registered in 2009 was mainly sustained by the carmaker's success in Western Europe, where it sold over 200,000 cars.

In Romania, Dacia upped its market share by 1.5 percentage points last year, to 28.9%, while the auto market saw an abrupt decline of 53.2%.

Dacia's best sold car in Romania was the Logan, of which it sold 25,722 units, followed by the Sandero (including the Sandero Stepway), of which it sold 6,765 units, and the Logan MCV, of which it sold 6,249 units.

On the utility vehicle segment, Dacia sold 1,588 Logan Van and 1,538 Logan Pick Up in Romania last year.

Dacia sold 18,000 cars within the country's clunkers program.

On foreign markets, Dacia's 209 sales reached 270,000 cars, 56.1% more compared to 2008. Germany was Dacia's biggest export market in 2009 and the Romanian carmaker sold 84,708 cars, up 231.3% from 2008, boosted by Germany's clunkers program.

Its second largest export market was France, with 65,956 cars sold (up 51.4% on the year), followed by Italy, with 21,739 cars sold (up 151.9% on the year).

In 2009, Dacia had a 2.13% market share in Germany, 2.5% in France and 0.93% in Italy. Other export markets for the Romanian carmaker in 2009 were Algeria (17,327 cars sold), Turkey (9,727 cars sold) and Spain (9,030 cars sold). In Morocco, where the Dacia Logan is manufactured in the SOMACA plant in Casablanca, Dacia sold 18,112 cars.
