Romanian Constitutional Court Clears New Labor Code

The Labor Code and its adoption were contested last week by 112 lawmakers of the Social Democratic land Liberal parties. The MPs criticized the adoption procedure for the code, for which the Government sought a confidence vote and by-passed parliamentary debates, but also claims the new law breaches constitutional rights to work, take vacations and go on strike.

The Government last week survived a motion of no-confidence filed by the opposition, which failed to acquire the necessary votes, meaning the new Labor Code is closer to becoming law.

The motion needed 236 votes to pass, but received only 211. A mere 216 MPs cast valid ballots in all, whether for or against.
