Romanian Constitutional Court To Discuss Teachers’ Wage Law Oct 15

The Romanian government said in the document submitted to the Constitutional Court Thursday that enforcing the law raising teachers’ wages by 50% would create major budget imbalances and would eventually lead to an increase of the minimum wage and pensions.

The government’s document states the law raising teachers’ wages does not specify sources for the funds needed and paves the way for major discrepancies in the state budget, government secretary general Gabriel Berca told MEDIAFAX.

The measure would prompt other state employees to demand similar wage increases, which would eventually lead to an increase in the minimum wage and pensions, the government said in its notification.

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies adopted the law unanimously last week. Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu sacked education minister Cristian Adomnitei, who also voted in favor of the law, and the government challenged the law at the Constitutional Court.
