Romanian Defense Minister Supports Iran Nuke Plan If Peaceful

Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu told MEDIAFAX that in his meeting with the Ambassador of Iran he stated his opinion that the right to nuclear energy in peaceful purposes needs to be acknowledged for every state, but he proposed the signing of a guarantee agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA.

Melescanu said that in his opinion, no state should be banned from using atomic energy in peaceful purposes, and in this context, the only solution for Iran would be to sign "an agreement for guarantees with the IAEA.”
According to the minister, Iranian ambassador Hamid Reza Arshadi said in his turn that Teheran wishes to develop a nuclear program with peaceful purposes in mind.
Melescanu said that, regarding the placement of a rocket shield in Romania, the Ambassador pointed to recent articles in Romanian media, stating the possibility of such an action to transform Romania into a target for Iranian missiles. Melescanu said that the USA plans to set up the elements of a rocket shield in the Czech Republic and Poland are based on bilateral agreements, and Romania, starting from the principle of solidarity, feels that this shield should be complemented on a NATO level.
He added that there was never talk of naming one country as potential initiator of the attack.
