Romanian Ex Education Min Under Anticorruption Investigation – Sources

Romanian former education minister Cristian Adomnitei is under investigation by anticorruption prosecutors, along with liberal MP Relu Fenechiu, for the manner in which the transformers were purchased from several companies in Iasi city, legal sources informed.

According to local media, in 2006 the companies held by Relu Ferenchiu (SC La Rocca SRL, Fene Grup SA) allegedly bought RON2 million worth of transformers which were later sold to power grid Electrica Moldova for RON10 million. A company held by Adomnitei attended the auction for the transformers.

In this case – investigated by the National Anticorruption Department – several people were heard, including former justice minister Tudor Chiuariu. In February, liberal Chiuariu was subpoenaed as witness in Ferenchiu’s case.

In February this year, Tudor Chiuariu told prosecutors he doesn’t know anything about the mentioned contracts.

Two weeks ago, a shortly before Adomnitei was dismissed from his position as education minister, anticorruption prosecutors called him in for questioning.

Contacted by MEDIAFAX, the leader of the Iasi liberals, Relu Ferenchiu, sid he was not subpoenaed by the anticorruption prosecutors and these are “older files” where his business is under investigation.

Fenechiu added he learned about the anticorruption department subpoena, but he has yet to receive a document in this respect.

Contacted by MEDIAFAX, the press office within the National Anticorruption Department did not confirm, nor deny, the information regarding the commencement of criminal investigations in this file; as such information remains classified at the moment.
