Stroe said Cioroianu’s gesture is “very sad.”

According to Stroe, Cioroianu was unhappy with the eighth spot assigned to him on PNL’s lists for the European Parliament elections.

“For that, we already took him off the list for the EP elections. Today he tendered his resignation, saying he no longer has anything to do in PNL and that he is discontent with the party’s recent decisions,” Stroe said.

Cioroianu could not be reached for comments by presstime.

Cioroianu, 42, entered politics as a PNL member in 2002.

In 2007, Cioroianu was appointed foreign minister, position which he gave up a year later following a scandal involving an alleged Romanian thief who died while on hunger strike in a Polish prison.
