Romanian Govt Proposes Draft Wage Law To Increase Salaries By 1% To 20% In 2011

Union leader Marius Petcu said at the end of talks at the Labor Ministry that Government representatives presented a draft wage law for 2011 which stipulates wages will be hiked by 1% to 20% next year, and a draft frame-law which eliminates the 13th monthly salary and vacation bonuses.

According to Petcu, state employees who earn between 600 lei (EUR1=RON4.2244) and RON800 per month could have their salaries increased by 20%, while for those who earn more than RON2,500 the increase will be of only 1%.

Cartel Alfa union vice-president Liviu Apostoiu said the draft wage law for 2011 is not based on 2009's salaries, but on those of 2010, reduced by 25% through austerity measures.

Apostoiu also said that in 2012, the Government will draw up a special wage law to set wage increase levels taking into account the country's economic growth.

Union leaders rejected the Government proposition to increase the minimum wage to RON640 de lei, and proposed the Labor Ministry to consider setting the minimum wage at RON675 or RON705.

Unionists said talks with the Government on the draft unitary wage law will continue next week.
