Romanian Healthcare Units Banned From Asking Co-Payment For State-Funded Fertilization Services

According to the ministry, public and private healthcare units which joined the program risk exclusion from the project if they require co-payment from patients for the abovementioned services.

The ministry pointed out that the in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer program is financed by the ministry with funds allotted to ensure the respective services.

Health Minister Attila Cseke said in March about 800 couples in Romania will benefit this year from the program, which has been assigned 4 million lei (about EUR943,000).

"The state pays for a single procedure per couple, and the funds are capped at EUR1,500 per couple. In private centers, costs for this procedure amount to EUR2,000-3,000. These centers will not be allowed to ask the patient to pay for the difference if they want in on this program," the minister said at that time.
