"If I'm elected president, I'll have a single term and use it to keep all the promises I make, and then put an end to my political career," Antonescu said.

He argued he wouldn't be able to do much if his mind were set on getting a second term, pointing to the country's acting President Traian Basescu who is running for reelection on November 22.

Antonescu said another step he will make is to give the country a government that would serve national interest at this time of economic, political, institutional and moral crisis, when the country is mired in recession.

"Romania is capable of having a good president, able to follow the rules of common sense, and a good government working for the country's interest," Antonescu told his supporters.
