Romanian Liberals “Cry Wolf” After Pensioners’ Rally

"As a result of what we have learned today in the pensioner rally in, the Liberal Party asks authorities to do their job. We ask the Standing Electoral Authority to check if the manner in which money was given to the people who came from Galati is legal or not, we ask the Court of Accounts to check if the money used in this action came from public funds, we do not ask anything of the National Anticorruption Department, because there is no point," Olteanu said.

He added that Romanian president Traian Basescu, as well as the democrat liberals, fiercely opposed the pension hikes.

"The same people today entice pensioners to take to the streets and demand what they did not want to give them the year before. At the same time, we notice that the social democrats and the democrat liberals, through the electoral bribery they employ, use the same National Salvation Front (Romania’s first post-communist political party - e.n.) methods, the same leftist methods, be it red left or orange painted left. They are ever closer to each other, as shown in the collaborations signed and sealed in Giurgiu, Mures, Ilfov, or simply discussed and arranged behind closed doors like in Bacau, Neamt, Sibiu and many other counties of which we will learn throughout this campaign. These are their campaigning ways, and they will receive an adequate reply from us," Olteanu said.

He mentioned that he expects the social democrats to explain why they support in local elections a mayor who has been dormant for four years, and he expects the democrat liberals to prove they exist in Galati county, "through ideas as well, not just through the shadow of the sailor (president Traian Basescu, former ship captain -e.n.) and his sailor mates who are now members of the organization."

He asked the democrat liberals to express a stance regarding the "convict candidate" for Galati city hall, Andrei Lisinschi.

"The Democrat Liberal Party should clarify its stance on the criminal candidate, the convict candidate Andrei Lisinschi, whom they  could either continue to support, thus vouching for his criminal past, as well as the criminal methods he uses today in electoral bribery, or whom they could shun and deprive of all political support," Olteanu said.

He went on saying that he would not be pleased to see such events in this electoral campaign and asked for the support of civil society in the unfolding of a fair campaign.

Over 100 pensioners and members of the People and Social Protection Party (PPPS) protested Wednesday in front of the Government headquarters.

The leader of the Galati Pensioner Alliance for Conciliation, Toader Cristea, said he called on all political parties to help the pensioners get to Bucharest, but only the conservatives, the democrat liberals and the social democrats answered his call.
