Harghita county police spokesman Gheorghe Filip said the accident occurred around 4 p.m. (Romania time) on national road 13A, near Harghita Bai, where the world and European ski orientation championship is being held.
Filip said a 27 year-old man of the Czech Republic, who was driving from Harghita Bai to Miercurea Ciuc, was driving too fast considering the road was covered in snow. His car slipped and entered the other lane, hitting a Dacia car and killing the 54 year-old Romanian driver on the spot.
Filip said the road was blocked both ways for over an hour following the accident. He added the car that caused the accident belongs to the Czech delegation in the skiing competition.
"This is very unpleasant for us and this incident will surely affect the Czech team's players," said Andrei Csiki, head of the Harghita County Sports Department.
