Romanian Min: Education Sector Laws Must Be Put Up For Public, Parliament Debate

Romania’s education minister Ecaterina Andronescu on Thursday said the laws regulating the education sector must be put up for public debate and also discussed in Parliament, arguing she wants ministry officials to complete talks with the unionists until August 14 in order to draft effective laws.

Asked whether the government should assume responsibility for the laws in the education system, the minister said she does not know whether this is "the best solution."

Andronescu also said Thursday, within the meeting with representatives of union federations in education, that parliamentary debates can improve the package of laws in the education sector, arguing these laws must consolidate the education system for at least ten years.

Furthermore, she stressed the future laws are meant to refurbish the education system and must therefore include the best ideas and propositions.

On July 28, Andronescu also met with the unionists in the sector for talks on education laws and a potential 4% cut in jobs in the sector. Both parties agreed Romania needs a Code of Education, not a package of laws under the label of certain ministers.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc on Wednesday said he wants the laws in the education sector ready by August 14, adding the government ought to adopt the laws in the sector by assuming responsibility in Parliament.
