Officer Petre Tiberius, 33, was running a quick intervention mission to help a U.S. allied unit that was under attack by insurgents.

The Romanian was shot at around 4 am (Romania time), about 80 kilometers south-west of Kabul. The Romanian was immediately boarded on a helicopter and rushed to the hospital, but died half an hour later, on route.

The Romanian was married and had a child.

Defense Ministry spokesman Constantin Spanu told MEDIAFAX the officer’s family will receive EUR80,000 life insurance and about 100,000 lei (EUR1=RON4.2198) from the Defense Ministry.

"The Ministry of Defense will grant the equivalent of 100 monthly gross wages, child’s pension, aid in case of death, annual vacation pay. In total, the family will get RON80,000 to RON100,000," the spokesman said.

Petre Tiberius is the second Romanian officer killed in Afghanistan this year.

Ten Romanians were killed in Afghanistan since 2003, when Romania started participating to NATO missions in the country.

Romania currently has 956 troops in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Ministry.
