Preda said the commission has a year and a half to work on drafting the laws, which is intended to be free of any political bias, but wants to have it ready to enter debates in Parliament on September 1 next year.

"It can't be done any sooner because the presidential election campaign is coming up," Preda said, adding these laws are the commission's top priority and lawmakers have promised to draft national security laws that can be applied for the next ten to 15 years.

The democrat liberal also said the commission will start effective works on the draft laws in January and the acts will consider all the drafts on national security currently pending debates in Parliament.

The standing offices of the Romanian Parliament voted late April to set up a commission that would draft the country's future national security laws.
