"France rejoices for the result of the elections and wishes to send a message of relief to our friends in Serbia, that when society and economy are up and running, they will be able to join the EU," Sarkozy said, when asked how he would comment on the presidential elections in Serbia.

He added that, in his opinion, the declaration of independence for Kosovo is inevitable and that it must be performed in the best of conditions.

In his turn, Romanian president Traian Basescu mentioned that Romania will be a very loyal partner to the EU regarding the decisions made in the Kosovo matter, but it will not acknowledge the independence of the province, if declared unilaterally.
