Basescu said that last year, he had a great time in Covasna amongst both Hungarians and Romanians and this is the reason why he chose to visit the county.

The president wanted to transmit a message to both Romanians and Hungarians from Covasna and Harghita: “Romanian citizens as well as minorities can follow only one road and that road has to be walked together. It is the only way to improve our living standards,” Basescu said.

The president said that many politicians still wish to gain votes by clinging to the nationalist-extremist issue in the country.

Gazda Zoltan, president of the Hungarian Civic Union-the Sfantu Gheorghe seat, Friday said that the president’s visit in Covasna proves the latter’s support for the wish of the Hungarian community regarding its autonomy and the teaching of the Romanian language according to special methods, that are more comprehensible to Magyar students.
